I've been thinking about getting into PCP air rifles for target shooting, but the options are overwhelming. What's a realistic starting point for someone who doesn't want to spend a fortune but still wants something accurate and dependable?

I stood in your shoes a few years ago, overwhelmed by regulator specs and tank sizes, and the honest starting point is a simple unregulated rifle with a good barrel and a hand pump, because you will learn the pressure curve and shot count by feel instead of trusting a gauge, and that knowledge stays with you when you upgrade later. Accuracy depends more on finding the right PCP air rifle pellets than on spending big, so grab a sampler pack of lead pellets in a few weights and test them before committing to a full tin, since your barrel will tell you quickly which one it prefers. I tried a pinty PCP air rifle pistol for backyard practice and it taught me the fill and shoot rhythm without breaking the bank. Reliability means easy o-ring access and a parts diagram you can actually read, so check that before buying. My advice is to budget for a pump and pellets first, rifle second, because a cheap gun with good lead pellets beats an expensive gun with the wrong tin every time.
