Guernsey Triathlon – Athlete Information for 2027 Faroes Island Games Selection
The 2027 Island Games will take place Saturday 3 – Friday 9 July 2027 in the Faroe Islands. Guernsey Triathlon can elect to send up to 10 athletes comprised of any combination of male & female athletes to compete across the individual sprint triathlon and the mixed team relay.
Below is everything athletes need to know about the event format, eligibility, and how to be considered for selection.

Event Format
Individual Sprint Triathlon – Sat 3rd July (TBC)

Swim: 750m pool swim (25m pool, 2 athletes per lane; organisers aiming for 52 athletes per wave)

Bike: 20km road (drafting format expected)

Run: 5km
Mixed Team Relay – Friday 9th July (TBC)

Format: 400m pool swim → 6km bike → 1.5km run

Team size: 3 athletes (2 male, 1 female)

Up to 3 relay teams per island may be entered, only 1 to be eligible for medals.
Age Eligibility

Sprint triathlon: 16+ on 31 Dec 2027

Relay: 15+ on 31 Dec 2027

Guernsey may select up to 10 athletes of any sex.
Eligibility to Represent Guernsey
Athletes must meet Island Games Association (IGA) rules, typically through:

Birth in Guernsey, or
-
Sufficient residency as defined by IGA bye‑laws
Selection Overview
Athletes can qualify for the team through four routes:
1. Pre‑Selection
Athletes who won an individual medal at the previous Island Games may be offered an automatic place, subject to ongoing participation and fitness.

2. Youth / Development Place
Selectors may award one development place to support emerging talent. This number may be reviewed depending on number of athletes in the Open Qualification pool.
3. Open Qualification

Finishing order across the line will decide selection of run-off places

4. Selectors’ Discretion
Used only for exceptional circumstances (e.g., injury, illness, or unique performance evidence).
What Athletes Should Do Now

Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) when invited.

This is encouraged but not mandatory for selection.

Costs & Funding

Estimated athlete cost: £2,000–£3,000 (after States of Guernsey travel subsidy).

Substantial sponsorship has been secured to reduce this cost.

Additional sponsorship will be sought to further reduce athlete contributions.
