Petit Bot Triathlon - Inaugral series Win for Martel

Guernsey Triathlon held the final race of the Ana Leaf summer Triathlon series last Sunday at Petit Bot Valley.

Given the recent weather the club was fortunate that sea conditions were favourable within Petit Bot bay and the planned swim, bike, run went ahead as planned in fair conditions.

The swim was relatively short a lapped affair of 3 x approximate 300 metre loops within the bay with an ‘Australian Exit’ where swimmer had to exit the water on each lap, run up the beach and round a cone, before diving back into the sea, great for spectators and fun for the athletes. Swimmers then had a short run up the pebbly beach to transition area adjacent to the Martello Tower overlooking the bay.

First out of the water with a healthy lead was youth athlete Josh Thornton in a little over 12 minutes followed closely by junior Tom Stapley whilst over a minute behind came a group of senior athletes including eventual ladies winner Amy Critchlow and a group of male athletes with medal contenders Ryan Martel, Dan Armsden and Richard Akers.

The cycle course followed a hilly course including the initial ascent of the ‘Col du Petit Bot’ to Les Bourgs, passing the Airport a descent of Pleinmont Hill, followed by climbing La Coudre to St Peters Church, down L’eree Hill and climbing back up the main Pleinmont Hill to return to Petit Bot. Jon Osborne stormed through the 15 mile bike course in a fast 41 minutes whilst others including Martel and Armsden consolidated their places with solid bike splits.

In the ladies race Critchlow was never closed down, having the fastest ladies bike split and quickest ladies run, although both second placed Emily Bookless and third female Chantal Green both impressed with close run splits on the four mile hilly course which ascended and descended the various Water Lanes surrounding Petit Bot Valley on both the St Martin and Forest side of the bay.

Ryan Martel showed the male contenders how his solid and consistent training has paid off over the last two years since taking up the sport with his first ever series race win and wrapped up the overall Ana Leaf summer series in the process. ‘Well chuffed to end the triathlon championships with my first race win and the overall championships’ he later commented.
