Guernsey Triathlon Squad named for Jersey 2015

Guernsey Triathlon supported by the Ana Leaf Foundation are pleased to announce the naming of the triathlon squad that will represent Guernsey in the 2015 Nat West Island Games in Jersey.

The squad has been chosen and named at an early stage as both qualification races have been held relatively early in the season and as the club wants the squad to have a clear focus on training 10 months in advance of the games.

The team will consist of two ladies, seven men and one junior development place.

President of Guernsey Triathlon Mark Naftel said ‘This is an exciting team and opportunity for Guernsey Triathlon, we have such a strong squad. James Travers hasn’t been beaten locally for some time, he took the win in Jersey, was third in his age group and joint 7th overall in Liverpool and has qualified to race for G.B. in the world age group championships. Ben has recently returned to race at a top level after some time away from the sport, winning our second selection race at Pembroke last weekend’.

‘We have a mix of youth and experience in this squad, Alan is a great competitor and also acts as a coach and mentor to some of the team, also a medal contender in his own right on the right day’.

Gower is the only member of the squad to have represented Guernsey in Bermuda last year, whilst Rowe has represented Guernsey in both Triathlon and athletics at a number of previous Island Games and at the higher level of Commonwealth Games.

For the ladies it will be a first Island Games for both Magda and Amy who have performed well this year, ‘I’m sure they will both work hard over the winter to increase their already impressive performance levels’ said Naftel.

Guernsey Triathlon are fortunate to have generous sponsorship from the Ana Leaf Foundation to assist athletes at all levels within the club. In addition Generalli Worldwide, through the Guernsey Island Games Association have awarded Triathlon a bursary which the club is using specifically for triathlon specific swim coaching. The club is bringing Stephen Bailey, a widely acclaimed ‘Swim Smooth’ coach over from the UK in early October to assist with the squad’s swim training.

Team manager Simon March, himself a member of the 2013 Games team in Bermuda said ‘The club is sending a squad that is capable of winning medals at the 2015 Jersey Island Games.  The selection process began earlier this summer with two races earmarked to meet set criteria for the Games Team and competition for those places has been very tough. This was great to see as it demonstrates the quality of our athletes and the commitment to excelling at their sport. The depth of the squad is evident. Spearheaded by the in-form James Travers, fresh from placing so high in his age group in Liverpool, and a fine win at the Deva triathlon earlier in the year, he will be looking to place well in Jersey.  As it stands, the squad is probably the strongest that Guernsey has sent to an Island Games competition and I am confident that these guys will not disappoint. It will be a privilege to watch their hard work pay off representing Guernsey on the main stage next summer.
