Guernsey 2021 Selection Criteria - Covid affected / Exceptional Circumstances

Team composition

The Island Games rules state that we can select a team of up to 10 athletes of which a minimum must be 2 female and 3 male. The Team will ideally be made up of 5 female and 5 male, provided criteria is achieved by sufficient athletes of each gender, with 1 one athlete of each gender as development athletes should there be suitable candidates.

The development athlete must be 21 years old or under on race day and still satisfy the time cut-off criteria following. The development athlete will be judged solely by the selection Committee after they have obtained the required time. In the event that an under 21 athlete gains selection on their own merit, then the Committee has the discretion to release that development place to a second under 21 athlete.

Selection criteria

To be eligible for consideration an athlete must obtain a qualifying time in any Olympic distance race or for the development athlete in a sprint distance race, before 30 September 2020.

Male2 hrs 20 minutes

Female2 hrs 35 minutes

Development Male1.06 TBC

Development Female  1.12 TBC

Selection events

Athletes will be judged on their results in the following two Olympic distances races only. No account will be taken of any other races completed in 2020 (unless exceptional circumstances apply). This will allow athletes to peak for these two results only and not be concerned if they are using earlier season shorter races as “training” races and training heavily through them.

Jersey Triathlon Sunday 19th July 2020 – Now Cancelled

Exceptional Circumstances now apply to all athletes as a result of Covid-19 Lockdown in Guernsey and elsewhere.

Athletes seeking selection will now complete an individual Time Trial in Swim, Bike and Run during the month of July 2020. This should allow both on island and off island athletes to compete on a level playing field.

1500 meter swim in open water, during the month of July, depending on individual circumstances and availability to access open water. This should be an out and back or circuit type course to avoid tidal assistance. Recorded on Garmin / Strava / Training Peaks or similar to include course detail.

40 kilometer cycle Individual Time Trial on open roads, out and back or circuit type course to avoid wind and downhill assistance, start and finish in close proximity. Recorded on Garmin / Strava / Training Peaks or similar to include course and elevation detail.

10 kilometer run time trial on open road, pavement, track or trail, out and back or circuit type course to avoid wind and downhill assistance. Recorded on Garmin / Strava / Training Peaks or similar to include course and elevation detail.

Any prospective development athlete should compete in similar Time Trial format at Sprint Distance, 750 meter swim, 20k bike, 5 k run with the same rules and format applying in each discipline.

The individual element times and evidence then to be submitted together with cumulative time, which will replicate as close as we can a standard distance triathlon.

Guernsey selection event Sunday 2nd August 2020 – remains in place, subject to review as we exit lockdown.

The above suggested qualification time should now be achieved in the Time Trial events in order to be eligible to race for a team place in the 2nd qualifying race (an Island Games course simulation race).  The team will be selected based on the top placed athletes within that race in the relevant categories: men (male) / women (female) / development.

Should an athlete achieve qualification times, but fail to finish the Rocquaine event due to a mechanical or similar issue, then that athlete may request the selection committee review a detailed racing CV from 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Off Island athletes will likely now not be in a position to race at Rocquaine owing to the requirement to Self-Isolate on return to Guernsey.  It is likely that no or very limited Triathlon competition will occur in the UK or Europe this season, this will be viewed as an exceptional circumstance, we will revert to review of racing CV from 2018, 2019 and 2020 (if any) plus Time Trial results.

In the event of a tie, the Selection Committee is then able to use their discretion to select one of those athletes.

Any athlete incurring a drafting penalty in a selection race has the result discarded for purposes of selection.

Off Island Athletes

Special consideration will be given to exceptional athletes who qualify to race for Guernsey, live abroad and cannot make the selection races. They should submit a detailed racing CV from 2018, 2019 and 2020 (if any) before 30 September 2020.  Due to the nature of the planned Guernsey race course, the CV should if possible include a race of a similar profile to demonstrate their suitability to the event.

Other exceptional circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Selection Committee

It is proposed that a decision on selection will be made before 31st October 2020. The selection Committee will consist of Mark Naftel and 2 others yet to be named, unconnected to any selection athlete. 1 male and 1 female reserve athlete will be selected.
