Greenfield returns in winning form

Last Sunday Guernsey Triathlon Club held the final race in its Ana Leaf winter duathlon series of 2013 and it gave competitors a chance to secure overall positions for the series. Despite the drop in temperature overnight a good turnout of 35 braved the cold and windy conditions. For the overall series win it was between Nathan Gosling and Alan Rowe due to the absence of Dave Crosland, but returning for his first race of 2013 Jon Greenfield had the opportunity to spoil the party.

The 3mile run, 20mile bike, 3mile run format is the longest in the series and took in a two lap run, followed by a short ride to the bridge making a dead turn and then heading out on a long coastal drag to Perelle and back, with the run repeated to finish. The opening run started tactically slow with those at the front looking for shelter into the head wind. By the end of the first lap there was a definite split at the front with Alan Rowe, Jon Greenfield and Nathan Gosling clear of the chasing pack of Luke Walton, James Travis and Aivis Kergaluis about 1 minute adrift. First female into transition was Nikki Neal followed by Colette Andrews just under 2minutes later.

Onto the bike and the positions at the front changed with Greenfield taking the lead by Vale Church with Gosling and Rowe in pursuit. First and second place remained but by the end of the bike leg Russ Smith found himself in third place having produced a great bike leg to overtake Rowe. Colette Andrews had also closed the deficit on Neal to a mere 30seconds.

The final run saw another tactical exchange with Greenfield and Gosling side by side for the first lap. It was Greenfield who took the chance on lap 2 and upped the pace with no response from Gosling, and by the finish line had a 45second lead over Gosling. Greenfield said of the race “it was great to be back racing again today. I wasn’t sure what I’d have left on the second run but felt surprisingly good. I planned to run alongside Nathan and back myself for a sprint finish, but Al was gaining on us so I upped the pace on the final lap and found myself with a good lead.”

The final result was Greenfield, Gosling and Rowe with 1,2,3 and a very good fourth for Russ Smith. The women finished with Nikki Neal pulling away from Colette by over 2minutes in the end, with Sonia Dean coming in third.

The final result meant the overall series victory went to Nathan Gosling, with Rowe second and Russ Smith taking a thoroughly deserved third spot.  A podium for Smith at long last.  The overall women’s results meant that Colette Andrews took the honours.

The next race in the Guernsey Triathlon Club’s calendar is an off road duathlon taking place at Delaney Park on 14 April and then the Novice Triathlon on 5 May.
